I hate it when you have a really good dream. The one where you get really excited and you don’t want it to end because somehow your life in-dream appears ten times cooler than your real life. Then you wake up, realize you are NOT friends with Nastia Liukin, and curse your alarm clock.

…dammit, I guess that means I can’t be friends with her anymore? I’m such a dork.

Second

Yesterday night, out of sheer curiosity, I decided to youtube a video of the new Elle Woods in Legally Blonde on Broadway. I initially downloaded the song “Omigod You Guys” a year or so ago because it was free on iTunes, and thought it was utter crap. I only got about 30 seconds into the song before I stopped it. Now, I can’t stop watching the video. It’s such a catchy song, and Bailey Hanks does a great job singing it. I think she’ll make a cute Elle.

My parents and I went to the green market today. We passed through the Veteran’s Park on the way there. An old man sat off to the side, playing his accordion. As is Kazakh custom, brides decked in white tulle wandered around the park with groom and party in tow, looking for pretty places to take wedding pictures. As they passed, the accordion man started playing the wedding march. I’ve gotten used to seeing white limos with rainbow colored streamers lining up in the streets. Unfortunately, a white sedan behind the limo didn’t seem to share the joy, seeing as the driver kept honking his horn rapidly like he’d never honked a horn before. People on the streets stopped and stared. My mom thought the driver was drunk. I pointed out that it was 2:45 pm on a Sunday, to which she said that people here don’t really have much to do. Point taken. Drinking seems like the most preferred pastime here.

When we were buying chicken, I glanced around. Intestines, tongues, pig feet, chicken heads, and horsemeat sausage (I think they call that kazy or karta here) hung from practically every stand. The smell was foul. However, there were some new additions today. Three pig heads stood at a stand across the aisle. From the chicken stand, I could only see the backs of the heads (if you could even call it that, since that backs were gone and you could see right into the brain and neck), matted with congealed blood. My dad and I wandered over to the front of the stand to see the front of the faces, and it was a sad sight. Eyes closed, tongue sticking out sideways from a closed mouth, ears with blood vessels popping out. My dad’s first reaction? “Looks like they’re smiling.” Two stalls down, a smaller pig’s head sold for 150 tenge. That’s roughly equivalent to a little over $1. I didn’t bring a camera or else I would’ve taken a picture.

First

I really think I need to start blogging more. I went through the handwritten diaries, xangas, greymatter powered journals, livejournals, and countless others, each lasting about a month or so before I lost interest. I really wish I had kept at least one of those up, because it’s really fun going through your old entries and seeing how much you’re matured. I still want a paper journal to write stuff in, but I’m always too lazy to handwrite a long entry. It doesn’t help that whenever I see a pretty journal, whoever I’m with always says, “Are you ever going to use it?” Sadly, I put the journal back on the shelf. I realize that typing is so much easier, yet I feel like online journals lose that extra personal touch that comes with penmanship. Well, let’s see how long this one lasts.

I was browsing wordpress themes before I decided to actually have a blog. I came across the one I have up, designed by Marcel Winatschek and thought, that would make a nice theme. I had to modify it quite a bit, but I feel like it was worth it…for the time being. I already have another great layout on hand that I’d like to use in case I get bored of this one.

I have a week left in Kazakhstan. I’m excited to go home, yet sad to leave. The next time I’ll be able to see my dad is over winter break, when hopefully our Hawaii plans go through! The last time I went to Hawaii was probably 12 or 13 years ago. I really like traveling, airports included. Other people get headaches at the mention of airports, but I find them exciting! My mom and I have decided that when we stop at Istanbul, we’ll try to find hamburgers or some other form of fast food. I have heard of one KFC in Almaty, but I have yet to find it. There might be horsemeat on the menu…

Ok so I realize the paragraph spacings are a bit tight but once I figure out how he wrote his CSS, I’ll fix it.
